Chronology
Previous Season Season 15

Season 16 of So You Think You Can Dance premiered on June 3, 2019.

Production

So You Think You Can Dance is back this season with new judges and a new look.[1] The judging panel with consist of series creator and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, as well as the return of ballroom dance expert Mary Murphy. New to the judging panel as permanent is choreographer Laurieann Gibson, and dancer/choreographer and former contestant Dominic 'D-Trix' Sandoval. Cat Deeley continues in her role as host for a fifteenth consecutive season.[2]

Auditions

The auditions have been revamped so instead of remote tryouts, the contestants come to the new SYTYCD Hollywood studio. Initial auditions, for dancers ages 18 to 30, took place in New York on February 9, Dallas on February 12 and Los Angeles on February 23. [3]

Academy Week

The Academy Week starts off with 79 dancers that have made it through with Golden Tickets. Here at the Academy, the dancers learn routines from chorographers in different styles. They have 90-minutes to learn it and then are put in front of the judges. The judges then make one of three decisions for each dancer: "pass" into the next round, "cut" from the competition and sent home or the dancer is made to "dance for their lives". There will be a Final Cut at the end of week in which the Top 10 Girls and Top 10 Guys will be narrowed down into the Top 10.[4]
